With the spring season finally gathering up steam and The Great Philadelphia Comic Con quickly approaching, my excitement level for this event was steadily on the rise. Surprisingly as a lifelong gaming and comic fan, this would be my first time stepping foot on any Comic Con soil, or should I say concrete. And with that I had a very clear photography goal in mind for Iron Oak Studios participation at the convention. The mission was simple to (A) craft photographs that truly stood apart and (B) that were indistinguishable to that of the big budget Hollywood studios. Certainly this was a lofty goal within the construct of only a few seconds time with select cosplayers on an extremely chaotic, convention center floor.
Good news is personally I would say mission accomplished. I wasn't alone here, huge props to my friend Sara, not only for her knowledge of all things Comic Con, but also for being a friendly presence for the cosplayers we worked with, as well for transforming into a human light stand. With serious space constraints it was not at all practical to carry a full sized C-Stand in a sea of superheroes. Her assistance was invaluable.
Overall a fantastic weekend, we had lots of friendly conversations, captured tons of positive feedback and did not experience a single declined photo request. All of the cosplayers were thrilled to work with us, really such a great group of people. Who knows with Wizard World next up to host their annual Philadelphia Comic Con on May 17th-20th, perhaps photographing super-heroes will become an additional direction for the Studio.
